You don’t need a cart full of gear. This list covers 90% of pier situations:

• A 7-8 foot medium-action spinning rod — long enough to reach past the pier shadow, short enough to manage
• A 3000-4000 size spinning reel spooled with 20 lb braid
• A bait rig (two-hook “hi-lo” rig) for bottom fishing
